Madeira Carnival |February, 22nd to March, 1st

During one week, the rhythms of Carnival take over the streets of central Funchal, which throb to the sound of marches and bands in a festival that combines precision, high spirits, vivacity, satire and revelry, imbuing locals and visitors alike with the Carnival spirit. The Carnival programme features a range of entertaining activities, highlighted by two main events the Parade of Floats on the night of Saturday, 25th February, involving around a thousand participants in a unique and colourful parade which brings sparkle to the capital’s main streets, and the ‘Trapalhão’ Parade on the Tuesday of Carnival, 28th February, where hundreds of revellers parade in a humorous way quite unlike any other, and overlaid with satire. All this fun reaches its climax in Praça da Autonomia, where the participants, tourists and locals continue to party in one of most iconic and historic parts of Funchal, the Old Town.
